Researchers at CU-Boulder have found that July 4th is the one day with the most human-caused wildfires starting, every year. Last year, some people in Aurora continued to set off their illegal fireworks, even after their neighbors were evacuated due to a fireworks-caused wildfire. Several communities are even calling off old-style fireworks presentations, saying they’re just not worth the risk. That’s Jennifer Balchi, an Associate Professor at CU. If you hear a lot of illegal fireworks in your neighborhood, firefighters say please don’t call 911 unless someone’s actually injured, or something’s on fire.
TAG– Some of the biggest places in the state are offering help– Jefferson County says illegal fireworks can be reported through its “Jeffco911” app. Douglas County has a fireworks hotline you can call between 4 pm and midnight. And Arapahoe is asking folks to call the Sheriff’s office there, but on the non-emergency number.
