It was disaster for the Broncos at home Sunday. After a great first half in which Denver seemed to easily build a 21 to 3 lead over the Washington Commanders, the wheels came off in the 2nd half, and despite a final couple plays giving fans hope, the team couldn’t come through, and lost their 2nd straight game of this young NFL season, the Commanders winning 35 to 33…

It created an unfortunate team record– In 63 previous years, the Broncos had never started a season with back-to-back losses at home. Denver’s first couple scores showed off some future talent, with rookie running back Jaleel McLaughlin scoring his first NFL touchdown on the team’s first drive… and a short time later, first-year receiver Marvin Mims, Junior caught a long Russell Wilson TD pass, ending up with 168 all-purpose yards for the game. That early lead looked good to Coach Sean Payton for a while…

The Commanders came storming back to score 32 of the game’s next 35 points. Then Wilson completed a hail-mary pass to Brandon Johnson for a touchdown as time ran out, to bring Denver within 2… but the conversion pass that would’ve sent the game to overtime was knocked away from receiver Courtland Sutton. Next weekend, the winless Broncos hit the road, to Miami.

Denver led 21-3 in the 2nd quarter, blew that 18-point lead, and had to come from behind to have a chance at the very end. With 3 seconds left, a 60-yard Russell Wilson pass was knocked around before falling into the hands of tight end Brandon Johnson to bring the Broncos close with no time on the clock, but the ensuing 2-point conversion try to send the game to overtime was an incomplete pass to Courtland Sutton, and Washington escaped with the victory. Wilson looks to boost his own performance to help the whole team…
