Helicopter Picnic

One Colorado man’s facing federal criminal charges for landing a helicopter in the middle of a national park, to go on a picnic…

The federal Parks Service says last month, it got calls about a chopper landing in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park.  Rangers got out there and found the aircraft, along with suspect Peter Smith and his friend enjoying a picnic lunch, next to a scenic lake.  Smith runs a helicopter company from the Gunnison airport, and is now facing two misdemeanor charges for illegal use of an aircraft.  The Parks Service now says this is kind of Smith’s “thing.”  Last February, he flew an airplane too low through Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.  For that, he only had to pay a 530-dollar fine.
