Amtrak is working to help its would-be train passengers find other ways across Colorado…
(Train Derailment vxr :33)
That’s because a freight train derailed over the weekend in Gilpin County. It happened a little before 7 Sunday morning, a few miles southeast of the town of Nederland (NEHD-uhr-land). Gilpin deputies say no one was injured, and there was no environmental risk from the damaged and destroyed train cars. Those Union Pacific tracks, however, are shared by freight trains and Amtrak’s “California Zephyr” line. At least one Amtrak train heading east had to stay in Grand Junction after stopping there Sunday. Amtrak says it’s lined up alternative transportation for its passengers. The Gilpin Sheriff’s office says it’ll probably be several days before train traffic’s back to normal at the site of the derailment.
