Southern Colorado’s “Return to Nature” funeral home is in trouble again, for doing business in the wrong ways…
(Funeral Home Trouble vxr :45)
Fremont County Sheriff’s deputies have found human remains stored improperly at that facility in Penrose, east of Pueblo. Many locals are waiting to find out what happened to their late relatives’ bodies, and how they’ve been incorrectly stored. The Fremont Sheriff’s office and the FBI aren’t saying just whose remains have been mishandled. Neighbors say they’ve noticed a smell recently, based on wind direction. That “Return to Nature” location’s license with the state expired last November. Its other location in Colorado Springs has an active license and no complaints, but still no one answered the phone or the door to reporters Thursday. “Return to Nature” advertises so-called “green” burials, where bodies are not embalmed, and are sometimes interred in wicker caskets. That’s all legal here— Colorado has some of the nation’s fewest laws regulating funeral services, and is the only state that doesn’t require licenses for funeral home workers.
TAG– State lawmakers are already planning to introduce legislation to regulate people who work in funeral homes. The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office is setting a news conference for later today. As of last night, it did not have funeral home workers or owners in custody.
