Colorado had a brutal summer for mosquitoes this year, and now that’s made the state the worst in the nation in terms of the number of cases of West Nile Virus…
(West Nile High in CO :29)
State data shows at least 460 cases so far, more than double the next-highest state, California, where there are only 153. Twenty-one Coloradoans have died of the virus, nearly 280 more have been hospitalized because of it. Public health leaders say the wet spring and summer let all the virus-carrying mosquitoes get a head start on the season. This is usually the time of year when West Nile starts winding down, but the state’s numbers show this is Colorado’s worst year for West Nile cases since 2007, and the deadliest year in 20 years.
