Last evening was a slow one through part of the mountains for a while…
(I-70 Mudslide :33)
I-70 was shut down through the Glenwood Canyon for a time last night, due to a mudslide. It was the first on that stretch of the interstate in 2 years. CDOT closed the highway just east of Glenwood Springs a little before 6, after mud and rocks covered the road. The mud was reportedly more than a foot and a half deep in some spots. Front-end loaders standing by scooped the mud off the highway, however, and the interstate reopened after a few hours. Three years ago last night, I-70 was closed due to the Grizzly Creek wildfire. It burned so intensely, a lot of the soil on the nearby hillsides is still unstable. That’s why it doesn’t take much rain now to send mud sliding down over the road.
