The Gunnison County Coroner’s Office tells a Colorado Springs TV station that those victims had been Springs residents, 42 and 41 year old sisters Rebecca and Christine Vance, and Rebecca’s 14-year-old son, whose name isn’t being released.  A hiker came across their remains on the 10th of this month, near the Gold Creek Campground northeast of Gunnison, and the 3 had appeared to have been dead for what was called a “substantial” amount of time.  The Coroner’s office now says it seems the trio had begun camping there in July of last year, and were set up for “long-term living.”  It’s speculated they may have survived until harsh winter weather arrived.  Family members have told Coroner Michael Barnes the 3 had set out last summer, planning to “live off the grid.” The coroner’s initial finding says winter exposure and malnutrition are the suspected causes of death for all 3, but the exact causes may not be determined for some time.
