A couple there says the utility should have to pay for hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage done to their home. The couple, John and Julia Iredell, had to evacuate their house on December 30th, 2021 as the fire really built up. It destroyed their house’s exterior, but the home was said not to be a “total” loss. The couple’s lawyer says the Iredells, like a lot of other victims, had been thinking about suing for a long time, but it only became clear to them as of last month that they had a case. In early June, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office officially pointed the finger at Xcel, saying a year and a half long investigation shows Xcel equipment was a cause of at least one of the two fires that destroyed a thousand homes. Lawyers say that’s strong evidence. The new action says Xcel knew that weather and dry conditions put the area at high risk that day. The attorneys in the new case don’t specify how many dollars their clients are seeking, but do say they’re hoping to recover enough to take care of their clients’ “economic and emotional losses.” Xcel hasn’t yet commented on the new action. More civil suits are expected.
