After nearly two years of delays, the trial of the man charged with killing 10 people at a Boulder grocery store may be on hold again.
After multiple evaluations and treatment, Boulder District Judge Ingrid Bakke concluded in October that 24-year-old Ahmad Alissa was competent to stand trial next August, meaning that he was able to understand the proceedings and assist in his own defense. But in November, Alissa pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, triggering a new evaluation requirement. The deadline for that evaluation was this past Monday, but the Colorado Department of Human Services failed to complete it in time, requesting instead an April 30thdeadline. A court hearing scheduled Friday afternoon could determine whether the trial gets pushed back again.
