Apparently, someone had dug away a lot of the snow on the pass, then posted on social media saying it was “open.” It was not. Multiple drivers tried the last few days to make it up Black Bear, even with their 4-wheel-drive vehicles, and couldn’t successfully make the trip. Sheriff Bill Masters tweeted out some choice language about the folks who went up there unprepared, saying in these words, “Some people have it together and know what they’re doing, but some who venture up there are complete ‘blank’ clowns,” referring to folks’ backsides. Without the colorful word, Masters’ Public Information Officer Susan Lilly says there really is a safety concern…

Some of the cars photographed stuck on the pass had Texas license plates. Sheriff Masters knows his stuff in southwestern Colorado… he was first appointed to the job in 1980, and is the longest-serving Sheriff in Colorado history.
